MUDMASTER GWG-1000

With more and more people participating in extreme sports today, manufacturers seek to provide durable and functional accessories to enhance the experience of those testing their limits. The Casio G-Shock Mudmaster is designed to handle the rigors of scuba diving, Spartan Races, Thru-hikes, rock climbing, and other tough outdoor endeavors. The structure of the Mudmaster starts with a cylindrical guard structure for the buttons, and gasket linings on the button shafts to keep out dirt and mud. Gaskets are places at other vital locations on the watch to keep it clean. A gel is used to give the watch vibration resistance, so it does not suffer damage while you are driving on rough roads. Clear, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal graces the face of the watch. You get a triple sensor (altimeter/barometer, thermometer, and compass) and 200-meter water resistance. Know that this watch is large. This helps with readability, but if you are worried about a watch taking over your wrist do take this into account.

GW-9400-1CR “Master of G”

The Casio GW-9400-1CR is an excellent choice for camping and hiking. First off, the watch is shock resistant durable so you can bang it around in the outdoors and it will still run. The Triple Sensor-altimeter/barometer, thermometer, and compass-are all useful in the outdoors. Just make sure to recalibrate it when you arrive at a new elevation. The sunrise and sunset time feature are also cool features for those in the outdoors. The solar rechargeable battery means the watch will keep going during your long hiking treks. The battery will last 7 months on full charge without being exposed to light. Make sure to check this watch around daylight savings time, as some watches don’t automatically adjust and need a manual adjustment.

It also features a stopwatch that marks down to the thousandth of a second, and can record elapsed time, lap time, and split time. It has an Auto LED light with Afterglow. The GW3500 is another Casio watch that can take high gravity loads. It can handle centrifugal forces over 12Gs. Along with solar power, atomic timekeeping, and auto hand home position correction, this is a watch for the pilot or frequent flier. The mix of analog and digital features in the face lend it the aura of a cockpit instrument panel. A mineral face means fewer scratches over the years. It is a bit heavy at 6.4 ounces, but it is a larger watch for easier visibility. The watch comes with the standard G-Shock package including stopwatch, multiple alarms, World Time, and 200-meter water resistance. Unfortunately, it also comes with the common G-Shock problem of low visibility in low-light conditions for the digital text on the watch.

This watch is billed as a “digital dive watch” but it does not appear to have any special diving features other than a 200-meter water resistant capability. Since many G-Shock watches are water resistant down to the 200-meter mark (660 feet), there is nothing particularly “divey” here. That said, you still get a sharp looking G-Shock watch that is tough and durable for a reasonable price. Features include 5 daily alarms, a stopwatch that goes down to a hundredth of a second, World Time for 48 cities, a countdown timer, and a full auto calendar. It weighs in at about 2.5 ounces, so it is not a heavy watch. You also won’t have to worry about replacing the battery often, as the average battery life for the watch is 7 years.
